Frozen Chat
FAQ

Questions, answered.

If yours isn't here, ask us.

Why doesn't Frozen Chat ask for my phone number?
A phone number ties your chats to your legal identity and your contacts. You only need a username. People find you by your username or QR code, and you choose who gets it.
Can you read my messages?
No. Messages are encrypted on your device and only the recipients' devices hold the keys. Our server delivers sealed envelopes it can't open. The security page lists exactly what the server can and can't see.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Use your Recovery Key (and recovery PIN, if you set one) on a new phone to get your account back. Without it nobody can restore the account, including us. Chat history lives on your devices, so link a second device if you want a copy.
Is it really free?
Yes. The free plan has full end-to-end encryption, 1:1 calls, groups up to 100 people, files up to 100 MB and 3 devices, with no end date. Paid plans add room, not privacy.
How do licence keys work?
Buy a key on the pricing page, then in the app open Settings → Licence → Redeem key. Pro adds 30 days, Business 182 days, Elite 365 days. Keys don't renew automatically; redeeming another key of the same plan extends your current end date.
Why crypto? Can I pay by card?
Crypto lets you pay without giving us a name, an e-mail or a card number. Payments are processed by NOWPayments, which supports many coins. Card payments may come later.
I paid but I don't see my key.
Keep the order page open: it checks every few seconds, and blockchain confirmations can take a while. If you closed it, open find my order in the same browser, or use the private order link you saved. Still stuck? Contact us with your order id (never the secret part of the link).
I paid less than the invoice by mistake.
A partial payment doesn't release keys automatically. Pay the rest on the same invoice, or contact us with your order id and we will sort it out by hand.
Can I buy keys for someone else?
Yes. Buy up to 10 keys in one order and give them away. Each key can be redeemed once, on any account.
What happens when my plan ends?
You get 7 days of grace with everything still on, then the account uses Free limits. Nothing is deleted, and you can always read and reply.
Is there an iPhone app?
It's coming: a TestFlight beta first, then the App Store. Meanwhile, the web app works in Safari once linked to an Android phone.
Is the code open source? Can I run my own server?
Yes, everything is AGPL-3.0: apps, server and protocol. Self-hosting is planned with proper documentation; today the hosted service is the supported way.
Has it been audited?
Not yet. The protocol builds on well-reviewed libraries (libsignal, OpenMLS), but the app as a whole has not had an independent audit. One is planned, and we will publish the report.
